Winning Tactics for Backgammon Games

Winning in Backgammon does not consist of a single perfect strategy that one uses all the time. The secret is having diverse tactics within your plan that you can utilize at different points during the game.

It should be stressed, however, that the winning edge does not come from having the most number of Backgammon tactics, but rather having enough, or knowing enough, to know which one to use at the appropriate time.

For instance, it is common practice for players with big early rolls to go into a blitz, or build a prime if they fall behind. If you use this Backgammon strategy, chances are your opponent can prepare because it is always played. Instead, you may opt to go for a two way forward game.

This strategy consists of constructing a mini wall (preferably on the 3 and 4 points) and using your other checkers to attack like in a blitz. The benefits of using the two way forward game is that it is unexpected and second, because it incorporates two Backgammon tactics into one, it is certain that one will work regardless of the dice rolls.

As any long time player will tell you, part of a winning Backgammon strategy includes setting up anchors. It is something that you will want to establish early on. If you get hit early and have to resort to a back game, then the anchors are indispensable.

If you are in a back game, it is worth noting that, because you need your opponent to have enough rolls to leave some blots open, it would be to your advantage to fall back behind some more, in order that your timing and hitting chances can improve.

The importance of having different Backgammon tactics for different playing styles and situations simply cannot be overemphasized. If you are ahead early, go for the running game and do not bother about building primes or trying to hit your opponent's checkers.

If you are trailing, try to set up anchors, as stated above. If that is not possible, then try to spread your checkers and go for the hits. It is a good Backgammon strategy to have as many pieces as possible in your home board, as this will increase your chances of hitting a blot.

If you are in a battle of primes, you will want to play with as low numbers as possible, because the last thing you want is to break up your wall. Strive to hold your pieces together and trap your opponent. Use the high rolls to escape your checkers or advance the others.

The most important element of Backgammon tactics is adoptability and variation. The moment you become predictable you will lose. So always look to improve your skills, and you will be on your way to becoming a winning player.
