The Backgammon Stakes Play

A backgammon stakes play is also called a money play where two competing players place wagers. The loser would have to pay the winner at the end of the game. This kind of competition has the following options to play: the Jacoby rule, automatic doubles and beaver.

First of all, the amount agreed upon prior to the game is called the initial stake. The amount the loser pays is the current stake at the end of the game. The current stake is the initial stake multiplied by the number on the doubling cube times two for a gammon, or times three for a backgammon.

A gammon is a finished game where the loser's complete checkers are still on the board. This is also labeled a double game. Backgammon is a finished game where the loser's entire checkers are still on the board with one or more still barred or on the winner's inner board. This is also named a triple game.

The Jacoby rule in the stakes play state that if there's no double offered and accepted in the game, the gammon and backgammon don't count. So, the winner only gets the initial stake in the money play. That's why automatic doubles are also taken into account in this kind of game.

The automatic doubles is optional and it doubles the initial stake immediately when both players roll matching numbers on the first dice roll. In case of automatic doubles, the doubling cube is placed on the board, between the players, with the number two side facing up.

The beaver is a rule stating that a player who's been offered and accepts a double can immediately redouble while still keeping ownership of the doubling cube. The other player then has to either accept the redouble or refuse it. The player who refuses the offer, consequentially, forfeits the game and pays the winner the current stake.

The backgammon stakes play or money play has sped up the game and made it more engaging. Take advantage of the Jacoby rule for a high current stake to maximize your winnings when you can with automatic doubles and beaver. Don't just sit on an initial stake win.
